Dr Komal Kumar

Behavioural and Developmental Paediatrician

Dr Komal Kumar is a neurodevelopmental and behavioural paediatrician specialising in learning difficulties, Autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). She graduated from University of Queensland Medical school in 2011 and trained in paediatrics at Princess Margaret Hospital, Perth and Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

She further subspecialised in developmental paediatrics at various sites across NSW including: Royal Far West (Manly), Sydney, South-Eastern Sydney and South Western Sydney Community Paediatrics Departments. During her fellowship she trained with child and adolescent psychiatrists and has a special interest in mood and anxiety disorders.

She works as a Staff Specialist developmental paediatrician in the Developmental Disability Assessment Service for South Eastern Sydney Local Health District. She has previously also worked as Staff Specialist at South Western Sydney in a variety of specialised clinical settings including Aboriginal and Refugee health. She has extensive experience in diagnosing neurodevelopmental disorders and managing associated behavioural difficulties in children and adolescents. She is proficient in use of assessment tools such as Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) and Griffiths Scales of Child Development. She believes in advocating for a neurodiversity affirming approach in all aspects of children’s lives. 

She is currently pursuing a higher degree by research at UNSW focussing on role of genetic testing in neurodevelopmental conditions.  She is a member of Australian Society of Developmental Paediatricians (ASDP) and a Fellow of Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP).

Our Services

Diagnostic consultation for neurodevelopmental conditions including: Autism, ADHD, anxiety disorders, Specific learning disorders (dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia), Global Developmental Delay and Intellectual disability.

Autism specific assessments: Dr Kumar is able to offer Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) if required.  The clinical need for ADOS is determined after at least an initial consult.

Ongoing management of behavioural difficulties including collaborative work with psychology services and pharmacological support for ADHD, anxiety and mood disorders.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) assessments – Dr Kumar conducts a thorough consultation with history and observation in addition to collaboration with your child’s school to diagnose and manage ADHD.

Psychometric Assessments: Dr Kumar works in partnership with local inner west based psychology services that are able to administer cognitive assessments. The clinical need for psychometric assessments is determined after at least an initial consult. 

**Dr Komal Kumar is specialist developmental paediatrician and does not provide clinical care for general paediatric medical issues such as asthma, allergies and feeding difficulties.  We are able to direct families to appropriate and relevant services in such instances.**
